Are Low Carb Diets Healthy?

There are a lot of testimonies out there that prove that cutting your carbs will help you to lose weight fast. These are the same people that will tell you that it is the only way to keep your favorite jeans fitting right. However, there are some serious downsides of a low carb diet that will make you wonder if a low carb diet is as healthy as they say that it is.

Your mood

You need to be aware that a low carb diet is going to affect your moods. You are more likely to be irritable, agitated, and stressed out if you are on a low carb diet. The reason is because your body needs carbs. Your body will crave them. If your body doesn’t get them, it begins to feel deprived.


Carbs regulate your mood. The help your brain function. Protein depletes these stores of feel good chemicals. As a result, you are not is a good mood. This is one side effect that no one will tell you about.

Depression is high among those who are on a low carb diet. This increases the need for medications to control your mood.

Sticking to it

A low carb diet is great for fast weight loss. It is not good for long term weight loss. You already know that your body needs carbs. It craves them. This type of craving is one that you just can’t ignore. Eventually, people on a low carb diet will binge. These binges tend to last longer and result in more weight gain than any other diet.

Low carb diets keep the body from being able to digest foods. The result is constipation. Constipation comes with other symptoms like bloating, stomach pain, and headaches.


It is reasonable to assume that you are not going to be able to stick to a low carb diet while pregnant. However, the restriction of carbs in the years prior to the pregnancy can affect your body. It can keep your body from being able to give the growing baby what it needs to survive because it doesn’t have the stores that it should have.


A low carb diet is not a good idea for a lifestyle change. Your body needs a moderate amount of carbs to be able to function on a healthy level. This means that your whole body needs the energy that you get from the carbs that you eat. From your brain function to your reproduction system, everything in your body needs a little bit of fat to function.
