Eating Heart Healthy

Sometimes the goal of losing weight is to decrease visceral fat. Visceral fat is especially deadly when it is found around the heart. It can keep the heart from being able to pump blood properly through the body. It can keep the heart from receiving the oxygen that it needs because it cannot beat fully. This can cause neurological damage as well as an increase in blood clots that lead to strokes. One way to decrease visceral fat, or prevent it, is to eat a diet that is heart healthy.

What are heart healthy foods?

Heart healthy foods are foods that are low in fat, sodium, and low in cholesterol. That doesn’t mean that they are tasteless, just that they are good for you. The thing to remember about eating heart healthy is that you want to have as few ingredients in a product as possible. You also want to eat smaller portions of the foods that you do choose.

There are some foods that have more benefits than others. Let’s take a look at those now.

Any fruits are going to be good for you.

Think about eating fresh fruits for breakfast. Add a banana to your cereal. Throw a handful of raisins to your oatmeal. Slice some peaches into your cottage cheese. Fresh fruits are going to be better for you than any other fruits. Next best to fresh is frozen. Frozen fruit that is flash frozen is a wonderful substitute. Try to avoid, or at least limit, any canned fruits because they are going to be high is preservatives and in sodium. That is certainly not heart healthy.


Whole grains are an amazing heart healthy food

Go for whole wheat bread. Oatmeal is great for breakfast. Snack on popcorn. These are all going to help to lower your blood pressure. The fiber in them is also going to keep you full so that you aren’t reaching for unhealthy snack foods, or sugary drinks.


The healthy fats

We have all heard the fat is bad. We have all heard that we should avoid fats. That is simply not the case. Healthy fats like those found in tuna, salmon, and even in olive oil are going to help to lower your bad cholesterol and raise your good cholesterol. Nuts, avocados, and seeds are all an easy way to get in your heart healthy fats without increasing your calorie intake.


Heart healthy eating is vital to having a healthy heart. It can be paired with a regular exercise plan to help maintain a healthy lifestyle. No matter if you are trying to lose weight, or just trying to lower your cholesterol, a healthy heart diet is ideal. It will help to ensure that your body is getting the vitamins and nutrients that it needs without adding unnecessary calories or carbohydrates.

Remember that your portion size is as important as what you eat. Once you strike a balance with your diet and exercise, you will find that leading a heart healthy life is easy and rewarding.
