Heart Healthy Diet

They say, “Prevention is better than cure.” It’s an old saying but still very useful when one applies it to their life. You do not have to be diagnosed with a disease before you plan to start consuming a healthy diet for yourself. It is always good to begin as soon as possible. It is also essential to keep your cholesterol level low in order to be risk-free from any kind of heart diseases. A healthy diet that focuses on your heart will allow you to live a much better life.

Motivate yourself before you begin

Motivation plays even a bigger role than a healthy diet. It might feel difficult in the beginning but you need to say goodbye to all the unhealthy junk food that are dangerous for your heart. You need to understand that what you are doing is important and has long term effects. There could be a lot of people who consider you an important part of their lives. Your life is not only yours. That’s why it is important that you motivate yourself for not only your sake but for others too, and take care of your heart.

Set up a plate for yourself with a balanced portion size

By a balanced portion size, it’s meant that in order to follow a heart healthy diet, you are supposed to eat low calorie food in a good quantity whereas, if you are eating high calorie food, you need to reduce the portion size to a minimum.

Here’s a list of high and low calorie food items you need to know about.

List of low calorie food

  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Fish

List of high calorie food

  • Frozen food
  • Fast food
  • Cream, mayonnaise, cheese and etc.
  • Beef
  • Fried items

So, these lists suggest that the intake of vegetables, fruits, and fish is better and is considered as “good” and healthy food. This does not necessarily mean that you don’t eat high calorie food items at all. Craving yummy food is a natural phenomenon and must be met. To control your craving is another thing, though.

Say no to unhealthy fats

The word ‘Fat’ is sometimes not understood properly by a lot of people. You can’t just say, “Potato has a lot of fat, so I won’t eat it.” This is a wrong concept. We have healthy and unhealthy kinds of fats. That is where the difference lies and where the concept goes astray. Potato is not an unhealthy vegetable till you fry it in oil. Oil is what makes it bad and unhealthy to eat. Baking a potato is much healthier.

So, while planning your heart healthy diet, make sure that you know how to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy fats.

Olive oil, nuts and seeds, avocados are examples of healthy fat containing food that you can choose to eat.

Limited amount of salt

When the recipes say, “salt to taste”, it means that it’s on you to control and limit the intake of slat in your diet. Low amount of salt keeps blood pressure in control which also favors your temper and behavior, as well as your heart.

Make sure that you eat food items that are part of a heart healthy diet in order to live a healthier life.
